How to Look After Your Carpet After a Summer Party

Having a summer party can be fun but it can leave your carpet looking tired and dirty. Use these easy to follow tips to save your carpet and keep it looking fresh and new.

Food and Drink Spills

If a drink gets spilt at your party, soak up as much liquid as possible with a paper towel and avoid rubbing the spill, as this can spread the stain and damage the fibres of your carpet. If wine gets spilt, create a mixture of baking soda and water and apply it to the stain. Let it dry, and then vacuum it up. Spilling beer or coffee on a carpet can cause a stain, and to remove this, use a mixture of white vinegar and water and dab this onto the spill and then blot dry.

If you or your guests spill food on the carpet, scrape up any solid bits with a spoon and try not to rub the food into the fibres. Then, mix up some washing up liquid in cold water and dab the stain with a clean cloth. If greasy food is spilled, sprinkle some cornflour or talcum powder over the stain and leave it for about 15 minutes to absorb the grease and then hoover it up.

Mud Stains

If you’re having a garden party and your guests bring mud into the house, let it dry completely before trying to clean it up. Then, hoover up as much as possible, and if any stains remain, mix up some white vinegar and water and dab at the stain. After the party, give your carpet a good vacuum and a clean with a carpet shampoo as it can help refresh the fibres and remove any lingering odours.

General Cleaning Tips

Always test these cleaning methods on a small area of carpet first to make sure they won’t damage or discolour your carpet. If there is a stubborn stain or if you’re not sure about dealing with it yourself, engage a professional carpet cleaner, as they have specialised cleaning solutions and equipment they can use.

Next time you have a party, consider putting down some protective coverings in high-traffic areas or near where food and drink are available. These little changes can make all the difference when trying to keep your carpet in good condition, whatever the occasion.
